“What do you think?” asked Bill, as Sarah was entering the monitoring room, worry distorting her usually calm face.

“It’s a success so far, but I really don’t like it,” she answered. “I really hope you’re right.”

“The next phase is critical, and you know that.”

“I know, I know! But we can’t fail. It’s been almost eighteen years and we can’t fail now.” She turned to face Bill. “It’s our last chance. We can’t afford to start over.”

“I am well aware of that. But I trust them. They’ve been designed for that very purpose.”

Silence took over the room as they focused their attention on the monitors. Aiden, in his room, was finishing his conversation with Maeve and making his way back to his bed.

“I’m just…” Sarah stopped herself. She didn’t want to voice her doubts out loud, somewhat expecting her silence to make her concerns remain irrational thoughts. “I’m just worried about what he’s going to discover.”

“It is a necessary step.”

“Yes, but it’s too early for him to learn… you know… everything. And for Maeve too!”

It was Bill’s turn to turn to Sarah.

“Maeve is stronger than you think. Stronger than Aiden, even.”

“This also worries me. Who knows how far they can go when they’re together.”

Bill gently smiled at her. He was a tall, muscular man but, like Sarah’s, his smiles always contained pure kindness.

“That’s why we made them together. So they elevate each other to succeed.”

“Don’t say that!” Sarah couldn’t hide her pain at Bill’s word. “He’s… They’re more than that.”

The man’s face grew serious again, and once more, he turned his attention to her.

“You’re very fond of him.” He waited for a response from the woman but when none came, he continued. “Be careful. You know why they’re here. We can’t let feelings get in the way of the mission!”

Sarah didn’t reply to the man’s warning. At his words, her thoughts wandered to Aiden’s early years, when he was just a boy, learning to walk, to read or to write. Innocent and eager to learn more every day, but, most importantly, growing to love her as the surrogate mother she was.

“We’re not supposed to. I didn’t even know we could actually get attached to them.”

Silence grew in the room once more, but Bill quickly broke it. “Me neither. I guess in a way… I got attached to them, too. But that doesn’t change why we’re doing what we’re doing.”

“I just wish we could… you know… delay everything a little longer.”

The man exhaled loudly, more out of pain than frustration. “We can’t, I’m afraid.”

“No, we can’t. It’s almost time.”

With these words, Sarah switched off the monitors and turned to Bill. They simply exchanged a look of hurt and pain, but of determination too. The next few months will be the hardest, they both knew it, and no additional words needed to be exchanged between the two.
