âWhat do you think?â asked Bill, as Sarah was entering the monitoring room, worry distorting her usually calm face.
âItâs a success so far, but I really donât like it,â she answered. âI really hope youâre right.â
âThe next phase is critical, and you know that.â
âI know, I know! But we canât fail. Itâs been almost eighteen years and we canât fail now.â She turned to face Bill. âItâs our last chance. We canât afford to start over.â
âI am well aware of that. But I trust them. Theyâve been designed for that very purpose.â
Silence took over the room as they focused their attention on the monitors. Aiden, in his room, was finishing his conversation with Maeve and making his way back to his bed.
âIâm justâ¦â Sarah stopped herself. She didnât want to voice her doubts out loud, somewhat expecting her silence to make her concerns remain irrational thoughts. âIâm just worried about what heâs going to discover.â
âIt is a necessary step.â
âYes, but itâs too early for him to learn⦠you know⦠everything. And for Maeve too!â
It was Billâs turn to turn to Sarah.
âMaeve is stronger than you think. Stronger than Aiden, even.â
âThis also worries me. Who knows how far they can go when theyâre together.â
Bill gently smiled at her. He was a tall, muscular man but, like Sarahâs, his smiles always contained pure kindness.
âThatâs why we made them together. So they elevate each other to succeed.â
âDonât say that!â Sarah couldnât hide her pain at Billâs word. âHeâs⦠Theyâre more than that.â
The manâs face grew serious again, and once more, he turned his attention to her.
âYouâre very fond of him.â He waited for a response from the woman but when none came, he continued. âBe careful. You know why theyâre here. We canât let feelings get in the way of the mission!â
Sarah didnât reply to the manâs warning. At his words, her thoughts wandered to Aidenâs early years, when he was just a boy, learning to walk, to read or to write. Innocent and eager to learn more every day, but, most importantly, growing to love her as the surrogate mother she was.
âWeâre not supposed to. I didnât even know we could actually get attached to them.â
Silence grew in the room once more, but Bill quickly broke it. âMe neither. I guess in a way⦠I got attached to them, too. But that doesnât change why weâre doing what weâre doing.â
âI just wish we could⦠you know⦠delay everything a little longer.â
The man exhaled loudly, more out of pain than frustration. âWe canât, Iâm afraid.â
âNo, we canât. Itâs almost time.â
With these words, Sarah switched off the monitors and turned to Bill. They simply exchanged a look of hurt and pain, but of determination too. The next few months will be the hardest, they both knew it, and no additional words needed to be exchanged between the two.
